Yet another reason to live in California
If taxes weren't such serious business I would have thought it was a joke. At the end of filling out my Turbo Tax California State return on the list of other unusual deductions one might take was Ottoman Turkish Empire Settlement Payments. Upon checking the official instructions for Form 540 from the California Tax Board
If you recieved settlement payments as a person persecuted by the regime that was in control of the Orroman Turkish Empire from 1915 until 1923, your gross income does not include those excludable settlement payments, or interest, received by you, or your heirs or estate for payments received on or after January 1, 2005.My guess is there aren't too many payments being made by an empire that's been out of business for 80 years.
