Kayaking Tomales Bay Part 3

The second night in our tent on Tomales Beach seemed not as cold as the first and again I heard the raccoons visit our campsite in the middle of the night. The morning beautifully bathed our camp in its warm early morning light. A small group of Marbled Godwits wandered along the shore fairly close to our tent. We had a breakfast of instant oatmeal then set to work laying out the tent fly and sleeping bags to dry in the sun.

After breakfast we walked up the dirt road that leads down to the campsite. After twenty minutes or so of walking we reached the top of the ridge and and the Pacific Ocean crashing into the cliffs on the other side of Tomales Point came into view. We came out onto the main Point Reyes road and continued walking along it for a while. A herd of cattle belonging to a local dairy stood along the side of the road looking very picturesque against the green fields and blue ocean. The KG and I had brought our binoculars and we stopped often to attempt to identify various hawks and songbirds. A lot of red tailed hawks perched on trees and poles along the way. In one field there was a small flock of Meadowlarks their gold chests and distinctive shape make them readily available.

It was late morning when we got back to camp. The California Quail were visiting again as we packed all our gear into dry bags. Without the firewood, and less food and water the kayaks were lighter paddling back. Less than an hour after launching we were back at Nick's Cove where we had left the car. On the way home we stopped again at Hog Island Oyster where I picked up some clams and mussels which made an excellent Thanksgiving dinner the next day!
