Buying Clothes

I've never been good at buying clothes. Most stuff I buy doesn't fit right, doesn't match anything else in my closet or just looks stupid when I get it home. So pretty much I don't buy clothes unless something really moves me. After watching The Corporation I'm even less inclined to fork over money to the clothing companies. Do I really feel OK about paying $150 for a sweater someone was paid 15 cents to produce? But it's hard to buy socially responsible clothing. If I'm going to buy clothes they need to be easy to get which means shopping at the big established brands. A lot of companies have social responsibility statements. But is it just lip service, good publicity, and more profits or are the actually trying to produce garments responsibly? If you're going to spend $100 at The Gap or buy a new iPod isn't it better if some of the money goes to helping people even if at the same time the profits keep piling up for the corporation?

The first step is to think about the issue. Though its unreasonable to think at this point my whole wardrobe can be made up of good stuff. Maybe as things wear out I'll start buying t-shirts of organic cotton instead of at the Gap and bit by bit buy more socially responsible items when I can. It won't change the world but it's a start.
