Surprising Stalk

The phaelenopsis in my office blooms fairly regularly, at least three times in the past two years. Not so the orchid that is not a phaelenopsis but a dendrobium. I've diligently watered the dendrobium weekly for a year or two now. Leaves pop out now and then, growing vigorously util they bend and turn brown at the tips. But on Tuesday I turned around and suddenly there was a stalk shooting up six inches into the air. There wasn't any warning, no shouts of hey I'm going to flower now so pay attention and remember to water me. It was just there, delicately arching above the leaves. The timing seems bad as the skies are turning grey, and the hours of daylight shorten. Maybe that's what this orchid's been waiting for. It's been so long since the plant bloomed I don't remember what color it is but I'm guessing yellow. I'm glad I kept up with the watering and didn't give up even though I had no hope this orchid would ever bloom again, I like the leaves.
