Good Neighbors

In conjunction with Earth Day, Trash Bash 9 was held in the Jack London district last weekend. Due to some confusion the event was billed as Trash Bash 10, but really it was only the 9th one, so the big 10 year celebration will have to wait for next year. Trash Bash is one of the best annual events our neighborhood has. This year 50 volunteers showed up to spend Saturday morning beautifying the neighborhood. And after the morning's work the streets definitely look cleaner. As each year there are more condos and less warehouses the streets tend to be overall cleaner than a few years ago. Still the efforts of the neighborhood make a big impact not only leaving the streets looking neat but also saving a truckload of trash from being carried by storm drains or the wind into the bay. The barbecue afterwards is also a great meet and greet event for neighbors new and old. This year the kids from the Covenant House joined in. Not only was it great to have their helping hands but I'm sure it gives them a greater sense of pride in the neighborhood as well. the local Covenant House facility provides shelter and services to about 20 homeless teenagers, and has made a tremendous effort to be a good neighbor so it was nice to see them participate. Everyone went home with a T-Shirt and a tote bag as well as a much needed dose of community pride.
