Kayak rolling repeat

After a week of thinking, talking and watching Grace Under Pressure I headed off to kayak rolling class again last night. This time I had some idea of what to expect, how it felt to be underwater and after viewing the video I had an understanding of what was supposed to happen. And this time it was all so easy. A quick hip snap and the boat just popped right up, of course it helps to have as an instructor a world class whitewater kayaker as your instructor. Kristen is an amazing instructor, she really enjoys teaching rolling and it shows. One look at what you're doing and Kristen knows exactly why the roll isn't working. She changed my hand angle a bit, had me do some drills to feel the paddle press against the water and by the end of the night I could do two rolls in a row. She said the goal should be 10 in a row, and also to try the other side. This week I had a Necky Rip kayak which I think is easier to roll than the Jackson kayak I used last week.

I'd like to practice some more now that I understand the roll a bit. The eventual goal I suppose being to roll a sea kayak. Actually being in rough enough water where a roll is necessary doesn't hold much interest for me. But it's a neat trick and now when someone asks me if I can roll I can answer "Yes I Can".
