Three books by Gore Vidal
My neighbor lent me these three books of essays by Gore Vidal: Imperial America, Dreaming War, and Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace. Though short, it took me awhile to get through these books. I find in many essays Vidal goes off on so many tangents I had trouble following what he was saying. I also thought he makes a lot of suppositions and accusations without factual support. I think I would have enjoyed more focused, in depth writing. On the whole though the books are thought provoking, and ask important questions about America, what it stands for and what has been happening to civil liberties in this country over the last decade. I think it's true that Americans on average don't know much about what's going on in their own country much less the rest of the world. And these books, though taking a dim view of America, politicians and corporations makes one think which is always a good thing.
