Some days when you go out to look for birds at the wrong time of year you don't see much. Which is pretty much what is expected, you look for the common shorebirds, some gulls maybe a duck or two. So when you see an egret you think, of course a
snowy egret. But it doesn't look quite right, no plume, legs slightly the wrong color, the neck not quite long enough. And it irks you for surely this is not a snowy egret. So you go home and look in the book and it is so obiously a
cattle egret, somewhat unusual for the area but perhaps something you should have thought of. And so the day that started out so very ordinary is a little more interesting and that is what makes birding fun.
