The Road

Cormac McCarthy's post apocalyptic novel The Road may be the best book ever written in which nothing actually happens. The boy and his father travel down the road in a world of ash and death. Precisely because there isn't anything but the two trudging ever onward the reader becomes absolutely immersed in the relationship between the characters. The boy and the father have a love for one another so intense as only a parent and child can have. It's a rare book that immerses the reader so completely in a world and Cormac McCarthy does it with such ease and simplicity.

McCarthy is a very private person. He has only given one interview which was to the New York Times in 1992. It's definitely worth a read. Someday I'd like to read again the three books of his Border Trilogy this time consecutively. But I have a lot other stuff to read before then.
