The Monterey Bay Aquarium, always a wondrous place has a special exhibit on the Secret Lives of Seahorses. I've seen very few seahorses before and knew very little about them. Up close and personal they're fascinating. The biggest ones were about a foot long, and looked kind of creepy. I wouldn't want to meet one snorkeling. Mostly though they're beautiful in their own way. The seahorse's snout and face looking more animal like than fish makes these creatures somehow more accessible than your ordinary fish. The leafy and weedy seadragons were also on display. These incredible creatures look so delicate one wonders how they survive in the treacherous ocean. Looking very much like the seaweed is extremely good camouflage. Everybody's favorite fun fact about the Seahorse is that the dad carries the eggs in his pouch until hatching.
There's a lot to learn about these creatures. I sort of wish the aquarium had more information to offer about the animals in their exhibits. They do very well getting the masses excited about the sea life which promotes awareness of ocean conservation but I would like to see the aquarium provide additional education resources. It's certainly worth a visit and has inspired me to read more about Seahorses on my own.
