Memory Keeper's Daughter
Generally speaking I'll read anything put in front of me. Even a book I'm not terribly interested in I can make it through, the last time I didn't finish I book I started was five years ago. But I had to give up on The Memory Keeper's Daughter. The storyline of a doctor who secretly gives up one of the twins born to he and his wife sounded intriguing enough. It could be an interesting examination of choices in life and consequences. Unfortunately I couldn't get past the poor writing to see the story. Instead of letting the characters develop and giving the reader the chance to experience the characters through their thoughts and actions the author crams the characters emotions down the readers throat. I don't need someone to point out the character is sad her actions should show it. I get the fact that the wife is consumed with loss for the rest of her life over a baby she thought died at birth. But there must be more to this character than mind numbing repetition of the emptiness she feels. There's nothing that annoys me more in a book than poor writing. I can get through questionable plots, unlikeable characters even science fiction that doesn't quite work if the writing is at least tolerable. About halfway through The Memory Keeper's Daughter I decided I'd had enough, there really wasn't any reason to continue, there weren't going to be any plot twists or character development. The worst part of the whole thing is I have to give the book back to the person who lent it to me without saying How could you possibly think this was a good book? It's barely readable, you actually finished it and then thought I might like this drivel? Instead I'll just say yes what a good book, great story and remind myself to be wary of who I take book recommendations from.
