Okay so this photo is really from floor 86 but the view from 102 doesn't look much different only it's indoors so you can't get a good picture. Many years ago at a U2 concert Bono talked about how when he first came to America he couldn't understand why everyone loved American cities - they were dirty, grimy, noisy but then he saw the city at night and at night the American city gleams in spectacular splendor. I wouldn't cal New York City particularly dirty. Giuliani for good or bad cleaned things up a bit, but still there's the noise and the grey of concrete and steel everywhere. At night though, from the top of the Empire State Building New York is majestic. The lights sparkle in white, purple, green, red and yellow. Far above the streets the quiet is serene. You can watch the city go about it's hurried life noiselessly as if you're somewhere else not in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Yet you are in the middle of it and the lights spread out endlessly in every direction. On the one hand an unbelievable amount of energy expended on thousands of offices long after the workers have gone home, on the other the delight of seeing a city shine.
