Mapping England

Generally if I am going on a journey I like a good map. Two years ago when backpacking in the Sierras I even bought some customized topos which are sort of a necessity when doing any sort of serious hiking. So I was a bit dismayed when perusing maps of England I couldn't find one that showed any of the towns on the itinerary for my upcoming trek across the country. It's really hard for me to get a picture of just where we would be going. Yesterday I received a box from my boss, a Yorkshireman, and much to my delight it was filled with One-Inch to the mile 1950's Ordnance Survey maps of England! Now I see the towns, the ups and downs, the lakes, the dales and it looks amazing. I can't help thinking how dumb can I be to not think of looking for such a thing a month ago when I could have ordered some to take on my trip. For these maps which cost Six Shilling & Sixpence net are a cloth material and most likely to heavy to make it into my luggage. But boy am I having fun plotting out the journey!!!
