A trend for the better

A recent study done by a Queens College demographer shows women in their twenties in New York and other large cities are earning more than their male counterparts. Though nationally the wage gap still favors men and has been increasing in recent years. Twentysomething women in NYC made 117% compared to male counterparts while nationally women earned 89% of men's wages. There's certainly a lot of contributing factors here but the one that seems to stand out most strongly is 53% of women in their twenties working in New York are college graduates compared to 38% of men. Young women living in Manhattan are also unmarried at a higher rate than the national average. There are a lot more professional opportunities open to women today, and since they are not marrying right after college they may be more focused on their careers. It's nice to see evidence that women are being rewarded for using their brains. Let's hope this continues as these women grow older, marry and start families.
