The Trappist
As downtown Oakland yuppifies there is maybe no where more hip than the Trappist. The small new bar specializes in fine European and a few American beers on tap (15) and in bottles (120). The beverage book is quite a tome, far too much to peruse at one sitting, luckily it can be found online. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to talk about the beers, give out a taste and make good recommendations. Of the few I've had my favorite beer so far is Van Eecke Poperings Hommel. As much attention is paid to the decor as to the beer selection. The brick walls and dark wood accents create a cozy atmosphere where you never really want to leave especially if you're lucky enough to get a seat. There are several tables in the back made out of plywood on top of beer kegs which only adds to the charm. The trick is to keep an eye out for someone leaving unnoticed by the throngs by the bar, then casually saunter back to the vacated table. During the week it's populated largely by the work crowd which thins out after 6:30. The Trappist is definitely the latest Oakland hot spot for a reason, it's actually that good.
