A Far too Lengthy Post about Survivor

Last Sunday was the close of yet another season of Survivor. I missed watching the finale as my parents were in town. Overall, it was a good season and the right guy won which is what counts. The weeks went by so quickly, they always do and the end of Survivor always makes me sit up and think about how much of the year has passed.

This was Survivor Season 18
. I started watching in Season 3 during a rough time in my life. Every week watching Survivor I was, for an hour, swept away from my misery and onto a desert island with a bunch of strangers. I didn't expect to get hooked on the show, or even to like it. For a time I didn't admit to most people that I was a fan. But the show totally had me from the first few episodes.

Survivor is something more though than just an hour a week escape. A lot of people watch it, used to be more but still there are millions of viewers. So it became for me a good conversation piece. At my last job several of us every Friday morning would spend a few quality minutes talking about the show. It's good conversation fodder because you have a lot of opinions about the people on Survivor. You can like them, or dislike them it doesn't really matter. You can gossip about the contestants, laugh at them, and discuss tactical mistakes without hurting the feelings of anyone around you. When reconnecting with old friends on Facebook I was amused at how many of them watched Survivor and it gave us something to chat about.

I also like the pace and routine of the show itself. No matter what else happens on Thursday I know that at 8:00 Jeff Probst will be there introducing challenges, leading a tribal council in his calm, sensible manner. There's no plot twists, it's always sort of the same in a comforting way. This season there were maybe too many similar challenges involving puzzle pieces, and no one on one battles. Even so, it's fun to see what the producers are going to come up with and to cheer on one team or another. I still get nervous for the person about to be voted out, the outcast leaves with a few parting words and then I forget all about him.

There were a string of poor, uninteresting seasons and I almost gave up on Survivor. Then last fall with Survivor Gabon the show got better again. The contestants were likeable, the challenges interesting and it may be a small thing but I think the cinematography improved. All the sweeping views of Africa, elephants and hippos right near camp made me really want to be there. It was the same this season in Brazil it looked gorgeous.

So I'm still a fan, and I'm not afraid to admit it.

I'm still embarrassed to admit how much fun this show is. ;)

This season was good because it seemed like more of the contestants were likable. Some seasons you want all of them to be left where they are.

I'd like to go if only for the weight loss opportunity! But I'd undoubtedly get kicked off before I lost more than a pound.

This finale was one of the better ones, imho. Maybe you can find it online to watch. It was funny that I'd forgotten so many of the players when the reunion portion of the evening came on.

Next Fall - Samoa!

Cheers,
Joanna
