A Visit From Flat Stanley
As part of a school geography project the son of one of my friends from Minnesota sent me a Flat Stanley a few weeks ago. My task was to send him back with a few pictures of the area and a letter to the class telling them where Stanley's been. Here's the letter along with a few of the pictures:

Dear Friends,
Last month Alex sent me over 2,000 miles to visit a friend in Oakland, California. Oakland is in Northern California and sits on the East side of San Francisco Bay. Founded in 1852, Oakland now has a population of almost 400,000. Oakland has many different neighborhoods.
Claire lives in a waterfront area called Jack London Square near the Port of Oakland. The Port of Oakland is the fourth largest port in the US. All day long you can see the cranes loading and unloading huge container ships docked at the port. The freight trains pick up the containers and take them right through town and out into the rest of the country.
Many people work in the City Center area of downtown Oakland. The tall, modern office buildings are quite a contrast with the nearby historic district of Old Oakland. The original
downtown of the city, Old Oakland features many buildings from the mid 1800’s which now house small shops and businesses. Chinatown is another old neighborhood near downtown. This area is usually bustling with people eating and shopping at the numerous restaurants and small grocery stores.
San Francisco Bay separates Oakland from its more famous neighbor, San Francisco. We took a ferry boat across the bay to go to San Francisco but you could drive over the Bay Bridge. San Francisco is at the tip of a peninsula and is connected to the rest of Northern California by the Golden Gate Bridge. The ocean air brings a lot of fog to San Francisco. Many ocean going fishing boats dock at Fisherman’s Wharf and sell their catch to grocery stores, restaurants and anyone
wanting some fish to cook for dinner. The city of San Francisco has many steep hills. One mode of transport through the city is by Cable Car. The cable car is like a bus but instead of having its own engine the car is pulled along by grabbing onto a cable running under the streets of the city.
The capital of California is Sacramento. One day we took the Amtrak train there from Oakland. The city sits on the banks of the Sacramento river. Many early pioneers came to California in search of gold, they founded the city of Sacramento in 1850. Sacramento marks the west
ern end of the first transcontinental railroad. The old part of the city houses a huge train museum and a steam train still chugs through town to give rides to tourists.
I greatly enjoyed my time in Northern California and hope that you each get to visit the area one day!
Warm Regards,
Flat Stanley
